Mastering is often referred to as a ‘dark art’. Musicians aren’t quite sure what it involves. In fact, for the client, it is quite straightforward. You want someone to check your recording or mix, in an accurate monitoring environment, and correct any imbalances on the sound. You need to know if there are any serious problems, but please note that not all problems can be fixed at this stage.
The mastering engineer can even sort out levels for you and make the recordings louder using compression and limiting. This is a skilled area and can ruin the sound if not done properly. At Re:Sound we would rather preserve the integrity and depth of the sound than make it as loud as possible.
